Union strike to affect Norwegian. Ryanair makes fun

The biggest Scandinavian low-cost airline Norwegian Air Shuttle faces the threat of strike action following a dispute with the Swedish labour union Unionen over working hours.

The Irish Ryanair, a low-budget airline that enjoys notoriety for its marketing style, did not squander the opportunity to get the air of publicity. Ryanair sent a bunch of flowers to Unionen to express its gratitude for putting stumbling blocks in its competitor’s way.

Iberia and Frankfurt Airport on strike again

February 27th, 2012

European travellers are in for yet another week of strikes. Behind this week’s industrial actions is traditionally the Spanish-based Iberia. In additon, thousands of flyers will face the protracted strike at Frankfurt Airport.

After the German airport operator Fraport AG failed to reach an agreement with labour unions, some 200 flights from Airport Frankfurt were cancelled Monday. The renewed strike may continue even until Thursday. Mostly it will affect domestic and European flights with among others Lufthansa.

Ryanair to cut routes at Edinburgh Airport

The Irish low-cost airline Ryanair announced it would reduce the numbers of flights from Airport Edinburgh by 21% following a row over costs.

Ryanair never wastes the opportunity to emphasize the number of jobs that will be created after it launches new routes or opens a new base. The jobs and people performing them seems  also to be a useful bargaining card when negotiating the issue of costs and now the carrier claims the cuts will imply that 300 jobs will go.

Airline news – Ryanair, Lufthansa and Air Berlin

Just as nature, aviation abhors vacuum and consequently airlines react quickly and are filling the holes left by the fall of the Hungarian Malev. Among them is the German flag carrier Lufthansa which recently started to fly daily on the Berlin – Budapest and Hamburg – Budapest routes.

Lufthansa’s competitor Air Berlin does not leg behind either. The company started operating Berlin – Budapest flights as well. The flights operate daily.

Airline news – new routes and services

February 13th, 2012

We start off this February-week with a handful of new routes from various, mainly European, airlines. First on the menu, is the Danish airline Cimber Air. Cimber recently expanded its offer of flights to Madeira. The new Billund – Funchal flights are operated weekly.

Another Scandinavian carrier, SAS Scandinavian Airlines, launched new service connecting Oslo with Geneva on a weekly basis. This route complements SAS’ flights offer to Geneva from the two other Scandinavian capitals.

Safe to fly with Ryanair? Pilots speak out!

A couple of days ago some alarming news hit the headlines in Scandinavian media. The news concerns security standards and it is the controversial Irish low-cost airline Ryanair that has attracted undesirable attention.

According to a report in the Swedish Sveriges Television a number of Ryanair pilots question the policies of their employer. The pilots, who chose to remain anonymous, claim that efficiency is prioritized over safety. The most evident example of this tendency are cases where sick pilots have been in the cockpit.

Air France strike

February 6th, 2012

We finished the past week by breaking the news about the collapse of Malev and we start off this week with some bad news for travellers as well. This time it is is about an airline staff strike.

The entire Air France crew was requested by unions to come out on strike in order to protest against a bill currently debated in parliament. The resulting industrial action may last from today to February 9, 2012.

Flights grounded. Malev next to collapse?

We had only just learnt about the collapse of the Spanish carrier Spanair, when the fall of another traditional carrier made it to the headlines.

Today at 5 o’clock GTM the Hungarian flag carrier, Malev, stopped its operations. Its planes are grounded and all you get when entering their website is a short message in Hungarian.

The collapse of Spanair & info for stranded passengers

The single piece of news that has dominated the aviation-world these days is the supention of operations by the Spanish-based airline Spanair. This carrier officially ceased its flight on January 27, 2012.

The news came certainly as an unpleasant surprise to some 22,000 affected passengers. Those unlucky passengers who have booked flights with Spanair or a travel agency may still get a refund for their tickets. Spanair is finalizing an agreement with IATA which should facilitate such a solution.

Ryanair – more than 150 new routes in 2012

After having been busy expanding to the Spanish and Italian market, the Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair is ready to enter Eastern-Europe more vigorously.

Ryanair serves a significant number of airports in the eastern part of the continent but as Michael O’Leary reveals, this is only the foretaste of the airline’s East-European growth.
