We begin with the Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizzair which, it seems, will finally set up its long-announced operating base in Belgrade in April. Wizzair has also announced it would launch routes Belgrade – Rome, Belgrade – Malmo, Belgrade Stockholm-Skavsta, Belgrade – Eindhoven and Belgrade – Munich-Memmingen.

The Luton-based low-cost carrier easyJet strengthens its position in Edinburgh by setting up three direct routes: Ediburgh – Athens, Ediburgh – Tenerife and Ediburgh – Grenoble. The keywords are city getaways, skiing and sunbathing. The flights will be in operation in September.

We begin this week with an update on what is new the schedules of various carriers worldwide – both low-cost airlines

We start off with the Luton-based easyJet and its new route from London Gatwick to Zagreb. The new route will connect London and the Croatian capitol five times a week. Fares start at £25.99 one-way. There is more news from easyJet – another new route will carry all Sun-loving travellers from Belfast to Malta twice a week. Malta will thereby become the carrier’s 25th destination available from Belfast. The cheapest February fare at the time of writing is £55.99.

After its withdrawal from Marseille following a legal despite with French Authorities, Ryanair expands its Marseille operations for a period of four months (April 14 – September 4, 2011). The development will translate into 24 routes (of which 11 are new ones). Moreover this Irish low-cost airline has announced it reopens flights to Kaunas in Lithuania as of April 14, 2011.

Reducing the environmental impact of flying
Among the issues dominating the public debate these days are the matter of our impact on natural environment. The most heated part of this comprehensive debate is the assumed relation between our activities like carbon emission and the climate change. Even thought there is no consensus as to whether there is a straightforward relation between these phenomena, two things are sure: and there is a growing number of both companies, such as airlines and known people acting according to the better safe than sorry principle.

The recent blood bath at Domodedovo Airport was just one the a series of terrorist attacks on both airports, public facilities and state-owned builings. At the same time we witness an unprecedented tightening of the security procedures in the airports around the world.
In this context two questions arise. Are the current procedures good enough to prevent such attacks from happening? And is it at all humanely possible to thwart the evil designs of terrorists? Given the endless ingenuity of the evil minds behind the terror plans, the second question seems to be a rhetorical one. What is worst it appears we cannot even give a affirmative answer to the first question.
