Flights grounded. Malev next to collapse?

We had only just learnt about the collapse of the Spanish carrier Spanair, when the fall of another traditional carrier made it to the headlines.

Today at 5 o’clock GTM the Hungarian flag carrier, Malev, stopped its operations. Its planes are grounded and all you get when entering their website is a short message in Hungarian.

The collapse of Spanair & info for stranded passengers

The single piece of news that has dominated the aviation-world these days is the supention of operations by the Spanish-based airline Spanair. This carrier officially ceased its flight on January 27, 2012.

The news came certainly as an unpleasant surprise to some 22,000 affected passengers. Those unlucky passengers who have booked flights with Spanair or a travel agency may still get a refund for their tickets. Spanair is finalizing an agreement with IATA which should facilitate such a solution.

Iberia’s new low-cost airline & pilot strike

The flag carrier of Spain, Iberia, has announced date of the inaugural flight of its new low-cost subdivision. Iberia Express commences flights on March 25, 2012.

Although the establishing of the new low-cost subsidiary is seen upon as a necessary step for Iberia to be able to compete with such low-budget airlines as Vueling, the plans have been vehemently opposed by the airline’s staff.

Vueling to add new Barcelona flights

While Iberia permanently deals with stike threat, another Iberian carrier – the low-cost airline Vueling is continuously expanding. Recently Vueling annouced good news concerning its base in Barcelona.

We start off with the British-based low-cost carrier bmibaby. Bmibaby resumed flights connecting its hub in East Midlands Airport. The carrier has served the East Midlands – Toulouse route previously and has now relaunched it.

easyJet – new charges and fees

A couple of days ago we wrote about the fare increase on the part of Ryanair (read ”Ryanair to increase fare prices”) and today we bring you a piece of news on a similar note. This time it concerns the British-based easyJet.

This low-cost carrier has introduced an administration fee of £9 instead of the booking fee. This new fee will be charged on all bookings. Another novelty is that from now on payments made with Visa Electron will not be free of charge anymore. All bookings made with credit cards will cost 2,5% of the total amount. Debit card payments remain free of charge.

Ryanair to increase fare prices

The famous Irish low-cost airline Ryanair known for e.g. its additional charges policy as well as its pursuit of media attention, will introduce yet another levy  from the next week.

The new levy is Ryanair’s response to the new EU emission trading scheme. The cost of the new regulation is estimated to be around 18-20 for Ryanair hence a new fee of 25 euro cents on every seat.
