Low cost airline WestJet announced yesterday it will begin seasonal non-stop service from Toronto to Bermuda, effective May 2010.
Recently voted as the number one island in the Atlantic and Caribbean region by the prestigious Condé Nast magazine, Bermuda is the fourteenth Atlantic/Caribbean destination for WestJet, which also provides Canadians with non-stop service to Jamaica, Barbados, Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, Cuba, and the Turks and Caicos.

WestJet today announced the launch of new, seasonal non-stop service between Toronto and Freeport, Bahamas. The inaugural flight departs Toronto’s Pearson International Airport at 10:30 a.m. ET today.
“Freeport is one of the most popular destinations in the Bahamas, second only to WestJet’s other Bahamian destination, Nassau,” said Hugh Dunleavy, WestJet Executive Vice-President of Strategy and Planning. “Just a little bit less populated than its neighbour, Freeport has quiet beaches just waiting for WestJet guests to claim for themselves. Following the interline agreement signed on February 4, Air France, KLM and WestJet announced that, the 2 European companies will offer interline itineraries that connect their passengers into WestJet’s Canadian network. Initially, connections will be made through the gateways of Calgary and Vancouver, with the option to continue on to Vancouver, Calgary or Edmonton.

WestJet unveiled its largest-ever seasonal non-stop flight schedule, featuring a record eight new international destinations and three additional U.S. destinations for the winter of 2009-2010.
By late fall 2009, WestJet will operate service to 66 cities in more than 10 countries, as compared to 51 cities in eight countries one year ago.
Beginning in late fall, WestJet and WestJet Vacations will launch seasonal non-stop service to Varadero, Holguin and Cayo Coco, Cuba; Ixtapa and Cozumel, Mexico; St. Martin; Providenciales, Turks and Caicos; Freeport, Bahamas; Lihue (Kauai), Hawaii; Miami, Florida; and Atlantic City, New Jersey.

WestJet announced the results of a study conducted by Leger Marketing indicating that WestJet is Canada’s preferred airline. The study, conducted quarterly on behalf of WestJet by Leger Marketing, one of Canada’s most well-known and reputable research firms, shows that 49 per cent of Canadians chose WestJet as their preferred airline in Canada. Air Canada was preferred by 35 per cent.
“We are thrilled by this news,” said WestJet President and Chief Executive Officer Sean Durfy. “Clearly, this demonstrates that our culture and our people are making a difference in the lives of Canadians. I congratulate the more than 7,500 WestJetters who have earned these results and who work very hard to provide a caring guest experience.”

WestJet will launch new seasonal non-stop service from Calgary to its two newest U.S. destinations this week. Service to San Diego begins today, with service to San Francisco launching on Tuesday, June 2.

WestJet today (25th May 2009) announced that Southwest’s progress on the implementation of the code-share program will be delayed. With the recessionary revenue environment, Southwest has decided to re-direct a portion of its resources dedicated to the code-share project towards other near-term revenue opportunities.
“WestJet understands the decision made by Southwest. Our continued US expansion is a key strategy for our airline, but code-sharing is only one element of this. Both airlines remain committed to minimizing delays and are focused on generating revenue as quickly as possible,” stated Dr. Hugh Dunleavy, WestJet’s Executive Vice-President Commercial Distribution. “We have already implemented our distribution agreement and are close to starting a cargo program with Southwest.”

WestJet Vacations will become the first Canadian vacation provider to create automatically-generated customized travel websites and booklets for guests who book vacation packages. In an arrangement with Vancouver-based Contac, WestJet Vacations launches eConcierge(TM). Four years in the making, the eConcierge(TM) platform offers guests added convenience, connectivity and information about every aspect of their vacation packages.
For each guest, eConcierge(TM) creates a personalized website (PURL(TM)) and booklet containing tailored information on flights, transfers, hotels, tours, destination and attraction information, discount coupons and more. Mindful of the importance of an online presence, the PURLs(TM) can currently be forwarded to friends and family and will soon offer users the ability to upload photos and share vacation details on social networks.

WestJet began non-stop, seasonal service between Toronto and Sydney, NS. As part of its enhanced summer schedule, the airline will fly three times weekly (Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday). “Service to Sydney gives over 100,000 people access to our 55-city network,” said Bob Cummings, WestJet Executive Vice-President of Guest Experience and Marketing.
