Spirit Airlines charges a fee for buying tickets online

March 5th, 2009

US low cost carrier Spirit Airlines has started charging a fee for buying air tickets online or via call centers. Passengers can avoid paying the fee only if they buy their tickets at Spirit counters. The airline says the fee was added in order to cover the costs connected with running their website and call center. Introducing fees for online purchase is a very rare move in the airline industry. Even though many low cost airlines charge their customers for using call centers, but none of them prefers ticket counters to their website.

Spirit charges $4.90 each way for the “passenger usage fee” (which is the official name of this fee). It is not the first time the airline tries to introduce this kind of fees. However, the first two attempts were not very successful and were cancelled after a short time.
