easyJet becomes UK’s largest airline

Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) published figures that show that easyJet is the UK’s largest airline, measured by the number of passengers flown for the second year in a row. In 2009 over 28 million passengers flew with easyJet through UK airports, which is significantly more than any other airline.

In just 15 years easyJet has grown from a small two aircraft operation to become the UK’s largest airline, operating out of 16 airports across the UK from Inverness down to Bristol. In addition the airline is making significant headway in Europe. easyJet is now the leading airline at many major European airports such as Milan Malpensa, and is the second largest airline in France and Switzerland. easyJet currently offers over 500 routes across 29 countries with a fleet of nearly 200 aircraft.

Virgin Atlantic responds to European Commission about BA/AA

Virgin Atlantic Airways, one of the world’s leading long-haul airlines, has responded to the European Commission’s Statement of Objections about British Airways and American Airlines’ plans to effectively merge.

Virgin Atlantic has previously told regulators in Europe and the U.S. that BA/AA would be a monster monopoly and should not be allowed to go ahead.

British Airways and Travelport Agree on full content deal

Travelport, one of the world’s leading providers of global distribution systems (GDS) and operator of both the Galileo and Worldspan platforms, is the first GDS provider to reach a new long-term, global full content agreement with British Airways.

The new agreement, which takes immediate effect, will see all of British Airways’ published fares and inventory made available to Galileo and Worldspan-connected travel agents worldwide until April 2013. In the UK and Ireland, the opt-in levels that were established by Travelport in March 2007, remain unchanged.

British Airways celebrates 90 years

British Airways celebrates 90 years of leading the travel industry. On August 25, 1919 the world’s first daily international air service was launched from London to Paris, operated by Air Transport & Travel Ltd – a precursor to British Airways.

Since then, the airline has carried more than 1.2 billion customers on its extensive network, and become recognised as one of the world’s elite carriers.

British Airways opens new lounge at London Heathrow Airport

British Airways‘ luxurious new lounge for premium passengers and top tier oneworld members opened at London Heathrow Terminal 3 on May 11.  The 300-seat Galleries Club Lounge is for eligible customers travelling to Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Helsinki, Vienna and Malaga.

A second dedicated 250-seat lounge for customers travelling in First will open later in the year at the same time longhaul flights to Sydney, Bangkok and Singapore transfer from Terminal 4.

EU opens investigation against Star and oneworld alliances

April 21st, 2009

The EU Commission decided to open two formal antitrust proceedings in relation to cooperation between certain airlines on transatlantic routes. The first investigation judges both existing and planned cooperation between 4 members of the Star Alliance: Air Canada, Continental, Lufthansa and United.

The second investigation concerns proposed cooperation between 3 members of the oneworld alliance: American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia. The Commission will assess the compatibility of each of these airlines’ cooperation with European rules on restrictive business practices.
