We’ve touched on the subject of the Finnish Cabin Crew Union strike and now it seems as though not only is it going to continue but in addition it will escalate. While Blue1 has reached an agreement with the unions, Finnair is facing the danger of escalation.
The settlement proposal which was put forward today (December 06, 2010) was refused by the union as expected. The biggest unresolved issue remains the question of the recovery time the crews should be entitled to after long-haul flights.
In other words, Finnair, which has until now has cancelled a great number of flights, is bound to lose more and more on the protracted strike. In addition to that, some other unions in the transport sector warn they’ll come out in support which bodes ill for the passengers.

As we mentioned earlier via our Twitter account and Facebook page, the Finnish Cabin Crew Union threatens to take industrial action on Tuesday, November 30, 2010. The strike would affect two big Finnish airlines – Finnair and Blue1.
It is still uncertain what the results of the conciliation process will be but in case of failure, the carrier’s scheduled flights will be affected significantly. It is believed that the charter flights may still operate to a certain extent normally.
Should you be one of the affected passengers, the carrier suggests you either postpone your trip or apply for refund of your ticket.

The two aforementioned carriers change their baggage policies as of October 1, 2010. The changes are not comprehensive and as regards both SAS and Blue1, they are the same. As far as the cabin baggage allowance is concerned, the restrictions remain the same as hitherto which is 1 piece of baggage (23x40x55 cm) weighing 8kg. Whereas when it comes to checked baggage, the new rules allow 1 bag weighting upto 23kg and with maximum size 158 cm (length + width + height).
As far as extra baggage is concerned, the applicable fees vary depending size, class and so forth but it is worth mentioning the standard baggage fee (Economy/Economy Extra, 1 extra baggage up to 23 kg/50 lbs and maximum total dimension of 158 cm 62″) which is €20, €30, €40 on respectively domestic, European and long-haul flights.

Blue1, one of the main players on the Finnish market – Blue1 accounts for 9% share of the traffic from Finland* – marks the opening of a new scheduled service to the third largest German city – Munich. There are plenty of good reasons to go there, both leisure and business, so travellers should be only happy as increased competition is always to their benefit.
The new Helsinki – Munich route will be in operation seven times weekly from September 13, 2010. Given that it is coming up to October, meaning Oktoberfest, the timing could not have been better!

The Finnish airline Blue1 is focusing on becoming the airline for Finnish business travelers. The company will expand its route network, renew and develop its service concept to meet the needs of the modern Finnish business traveler, and double the number of its aircraft.
Started at the beginning of 2010, the expansion of the Blue1 route network is continuing. Blue1 is investing heavily in the present and upcoming business travel destinations in Europe and expanding its route network both in the number of destinations and departing flights. Blue1 will also acquire Boeing 717-200 aircraft for its fleet in autumn 2010, intending to use just one aircraft type for the entire fleet, and to double the size of the fleet over the next couple of years. The launch of Croatia as a new Blue1 destination last summer turned out to be such a success, that Blue1 will multiply next summer’s flights to Croatia starting early spring 2010. Flights from Helsinki to Dubrovnik begin already on April 3, 2010 on Saturdays, and as from May 4, 2010 also on Tuesdays. The route to Dubrovnik will be operated twice a week until end of October.
Flights from Helsinki to Split will be resumed on April 30, 2010 with departures twice a week, on Fridays and Sundays. Dubrovnik is a wonderful starting point for exploring southern Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Chief Executive Board of Star Alliance, of which SAS Scandinavian Airlines is a founding member, has accepted the membership application of Aegean Airlines, the largest airline in Greece. This means SAS soon can offer its customers 28 new destinations in Greece. SAS currently operates 10 flights a week from both Copenhagen and Stockholm, which will connect smoothly to Aegean’s wide network. Aegean’s destinations include the islands of Corfu, Kefalonia, Kos, Mykonos, Rhodes and Santorini, amongst others.
Aegean Airlines has operated for 10 years and operates a fleet of 31 aircraft covering a total of 47 domestic and international routes on 200 daily flights. Specifically 23 routes in Greece are covered, as well as a further 24 international routes. In 2008, Aegean became the largest Greek airline in terms of passenger numbers.

After introducing a higher level of consumer protection in Europe under the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive from 2005 and the review of the “Rules for the operation of air services in the Community” (known as the “third package”), the European Commission believed that it was time to perform a “health check” of airlines’ and travel agents’ ticket selling websites.
