Iberia’s new low-cost airline & pilot strike

January 24th, 2012

The flag carrier of Spain, Iberia, has announced date of the inaugural flight of its new low-cost subdivision. Iberia Express commences flights on March 25, 2012.

Although the establishing of the new low-cost subsidiary is seen upon as a necessary step for Iberia to be able to compete with such low-budget airlines as Vueling, the plans have been vehemently opposed by the airline’s staff.

The opposition has led to several industrial actions so far. Iberia has just prevented the announced ground staff strike but may still face the danger of industrial action on the part of its’ pilots. Iberia’s passengers may therefore expect flight disruptions in the days ahead – on January 25, 27 and 30.
