Baggage Policy: Lufthansa

August 26th, 2010

Why don’t you take a look at the updated version of this article?

Are you about to travel with the aviation giant, Lufthansa soon? Wondering about their policy governing the matter of baggage? Their official sites elaborates on this issue in a clear manner (everything organized as a series of frequently asked questions and answers thereto) but if you prefer a really brief résumé, that is what we are going to give you.

First and foremost, the fundamental question – what is free of charge? Well, there are two luggage categories included in the fare:

a) Carry-on baggage – the allowed sizes of each piece of hand baggage (one in Economy Class and up to two First/Business) are 55 x 40 x 20 cm whereas the weight is 8kg.

Note that there is an increasing number of countries following certain restrictions concerning hand-baggage items, such as medications, liquid containers or baby food. These items must be kept separately in a transparent, resealable plastic bag.

Further there are two categories of additional objects you can take with you: technical appliances (latops, MP-3 players) and things like coat/shawl, crutches, infant carrier, reading material etc.

b) Free baggage allowance – there are some general rules which apply on all European routes as well as routes between Europe and many other countries e.g. Frankfurt – London and separate regulations for some long-haul routes. By and large the free baggage allowance is about the weight rather than quantity.

On most of the routes depending on class (First, Business, Economy) one is allowed to take respectively 40/30/20 kg and in addition 1 ski bag.

Some long-haul flights differ from the above in that there is a restricted number of luggage pieces, such as the Europe – the USA/Canada/Mexico routes where one cannot exceed the limit of 32 kg and 2 pieces of luggage. Are you going to fly long-haul, you may find this here chart useful (when redirected, scroll down a bit).

Note – the above may not apply on code-share flights.

Now that we now what is included in the ticket price, let move on to the next point :

Excess and special baggage. In case you either inadvertently or deliberately exceeded any luggage limitation, it will incur a charge. Note that such a charge refers to one single route and does not covered e.g. the return trip.

Charges are calculated based on the destination. All destinations are divided into 5 zones and charges start at €5 and €10 for the first two zones and increase to €40 for the 5. zone. The European routes fall into the two first zones. Simple and clear, is it not?

These were the general rules pertaining to luggage. Should you be interested to learn about some more particular regulations, we suggest you visit the information/service section on the the carrier’s website. We hope you found it helpful and encourage to follow our blog.

On Lufthansa website I can see the old baggage rules for tickets issued before December 31 2009. I can also see the new baggage rules for tickets issued after 15 November 2010. I booked my flight from Manchester to Sao Paulo Brazil (via Frankfurt) in July 2010. Which rules apply to me? How much free hold luggage am I allowed in Economy.
    Thanks

I will be flying on Lufthansa from Minsk to Frankfurt and have onward confirmed flight within 2 hr. after arrival to Frankfurt on Delta to Atlanta. Offcourse, I have two tikets. One with Lufthansa and other with Delta. The flight from Minsk arrive to Frankfurt Terminal #1 and Delta flight leaves from Terminal 2. Its my understanding that Lufthansa gate agent can check my baggage to Atlanta, so far I can provide my onward Delta flight to Atlanta. I prefer to stay within Transit area through Sky train from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2. Please confirm !
