Tips & tricks: mobile check-in

February 25th, 2010

Today’s common way of making things easier, on-line check-in, has got its even more dynamic successor – mobile check-in. Sound names like KLM or Air France belong among those who started working on mobile check-in project first, closely followed by German airlines Lufthansa.

When can you use mobile check-in?

  • The service is mainly available for high-resolution phone screens with Internet access (it includes so called smart phones like iPhone, Blackberry or PDA).
  • You can use the service even though you did not buy your ticket on-line.
  • Mobile check-in is available namely on direct flights for those who travel alone.
  • You can check-in with your mobile from 30 to 1 hour prior to departure when traveling with Air France or KLM, for travel with Lufthansa you can do so from 23 hours before departure.

  • For which flights is this service offered?
If you want to check-in and then print out your ticket either at home or at the airport, you can use mobile check-in for almost all flights from Europe to Europe and to destinations like Russia, Turkey and Kazakstan. But if you plan both your check-in and boarding ticket by your mobile phone, you will have to travel with KLM – Air France from the Netherlands / France to European destinations, from European destinations (Austria, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Hungary, Latvia, Norway, Spain or Sweden) to France/the Netherlands or travel just within France. As far Lufthansa the service is related to flights departing from Germany.

    How does it actually work?
First of all you have to log on to the official pages of the company you are flying with and find the mobile check-in link. Type in your e-ticket code or booking code and your flight number. You personal data should appear on the screen of your cell phone right afther that. Then you can pick your seat. Your boarding ticket will be delivered in the form of e-mail, MMS or SMS depending on your final destination, preferences and technical options of your cell phone. In case of getting your ticket by SMS you are likely to get all the information (personal details & so called „barcode“) in two messages. Don’t delete these messages under any circumstances as you will need to enclose these to an airport scanner decoding your barcode before you get on the board.

You don’t even have to print out your ticket for some selected destinations (as mentioned above) – your barcode and personal details in the message take over the role of a boarding ticket. But as experience of American airlines‘ passangers shows, it might pay off to have a physical evidence of your flight – a printed ticket. If you are a mile collector in one of the frequent flyer programs and your airlines forget to add your miles to your personal account out of some reason, your only evidence you have got is your boarding ticket.
