Hi! Why not get redirected to the latest updated version of this article?

Interested to learn more? Have a look at some of our previous articles in this series. The baggage policy of various airlines:

A short time ago we have presented new serial about low cost airlines‘ policy. The very first was the baggage policy of Ryanair. Lets continue and find out more about baggage policies. But remember that the baggage fees change quite often and that it is necessary to follow the airlines’ websites to find the latest updates. Today we will present you one of the Asia most favourite low cost airline – AirAsia.

Low cost airline AirAsia belongs to the most favourite low cost airlines in Asia. The airline flies to various cities in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia as well as to other destinations worldwide. What should you know before buying an airline ticket with them? How to pack your suitcase?

Cabin Baggage

One of the things that low cost airlines offer for free is cabin baggage. Free cabin baggage allowance is 1 piece of cabin baggage. It should weigh no more than 7 kg and not exceed the maximum dimensions of 56 cm x 36 cm x 23 cm .

Checked Baggage

Each passenger is permitted to check in bags with a maximum weight of 15 kg. A baggage fee is charged for the carriage of checked baggage, which will be charged at a discounted rate if purchased at time of booking or up to 24 hours prior to the scheduled time of departure or at a full rate at the airport check-in counters. Passengers have to pay RM 20 when checked online and RM 30 when checked at the airport.

Excess Baggage

AirAsia’s passengers can also carry more than checked baggage weighing 15 kg. Excess baggage fee differs according to the destinations – domestic routes are charged RM 15 per kilo and international routes are charged RM 20 per each kilo.

Can a family of 6 people pack the luggage in 3 total pieces.(Weight per piece:30kg instead of packing 15kg for each person in 6 different bags?)

  2. September 6th, 2010 at 08:02 | #2

Hello Mrs. Hussain, I am afraid that won’t be taken the same way. However, you can contact directly the airline for further information.

What is the maximum dimenensions (not weight) allowed for checked-in baggage on Air Asia please. I tried asking Air Asia via their ‘Live Help’ but the waiting time was 97 minutes

  4. October 6th, 2010 at 08:36 | #4

Hello Roy, the problem is that Air Asia doesn’t have this information on its website – the only dimensions they are talking about is for carry-on baggage (56x36x23 cm). If they don’t respond to your calls or emails I would suggest you to follow general rule: height + length + width = max. 158 cm

I have booked airasia tickets online for travel from Chennai to Kuala Lumpur.
By Mistake I opted for Supersize Baggage (Pre-book) and the cost of that got added to the total. Is it possible to transfer the payment done for the checked baggage to food on board. I will not be having much luggage to be checked in.

  8. November 23rd, 2010 at 08:19 | #8

Hello Simiao, unfortunatelly I can’t help you – our Blog only informs about the latest news but it isn’t connected with any airline. I would suggest you contacting Air Asia directly. Good luck!

can someone tell me how to pre-book a 30kg baggage on Airasia. I’ve checked their website n reviewed their policy, but donot find an online link to pre-book my luggage. I already hv a confirm ticket.
    thanks

  18. June 21st, 2011 at 14:56 | #18

    Hi Ska,

Our guess would be that one can find the pre-booking service either in “Supersize my baggage” or during the on-line check in but we are just guessing. Why don’t you send them a quick tweet? That’s the quickest way!

    good luck

Cabin Baggage restrictions as posted on the Air Asia website:

Unchecked Baggage: Passengers (except infants) are allowed two (2) items of baggage to be carried on board. The items of baggage may be a combination of any two of the following: cabin bag or a laptop bag or a handbag. The cabin bag shall not exceed the dimensions of 56cm X 36cm X 23cm and must not weigh more than 7kg. Such baggage must fit under the seat in front of you or in an enclosed storage compartment in the cabin. Items determined by us to be of excessive weight or size or of an offensive nature will not be permitted on board. Subject to the prevalent applicable local laws and regulations passengers may take liquids on board in their hand luggage provided they meet the following restrictions:

The liquid is in a container with a maximum volume of 100ml
That all liquid containers meeting the maximum volume of 100ml each can be fitted comfortably into a transparent, re-sealable 1 litre plastic bag

The plastic bag should be presented separately at security. You may be required to dispose of liquids which do not meet the above requirements.

    As I understand it:
You can have carry on: 1 Cabin bag with the specified dimensions and not exceeding 7 kg + 1 handbag or camera bag or laptop bag.

Just to be safe, I am planning to print out their terms and conditions (dated) to take with me when I fly with them in August!

    Hi there,

Things may have changed since we published out post on Air Asia’s cabin Baggage restrictions so we may consider to have a little update. I guess the way you understand
the baggage policy is right although, the best way to find it out would be to call them and get confirmation. Anyway printing it out will not do any harm!

    good luck on your trip

    Hello.

I will be travelling to the UK soon and I just bought a supersize 30kg weight allowance. What I’m wondering is if I can spread the weight out into two bags rather that letting all the weight sit in one bag and risk the bag getting more damage due to such a heavy weight during the travel. Thanks.

  22. September 14th, 2011 at 16:27 | #22

    Hi Natasha,

If you want to be on the safe side, give the customer service a ring. We just run a blog and cannot give any binding answer on behalf of the carrier in question.

    good luck

Ok talking about carry extra weight on airasia. My explanation is based on Airport at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
You can perform pre book as normal,
Case 1: You purchase weight from HCM to KL for 30kg
On the day of depart if your weight is more than 30kg, you need to pay USD15 for each kilo
Case 2: You purchase weight from HCM to KL for 20kg and you already perform mobile check in
If you bring more than 20kg, you need to pay USD15 per kilo
Case 3: You purchase weight from HCM to KL for 20kg and you not yet perform mobile check in
    i. You can upsize your weight 4 hour before fly
Case 4: You not preform pre-book for weight
    1. you can purchase the weight 4 hrs before fly or you can buy extra buggage at USD18 for 15 kg…. more than 15kg… you need to pay USD15 per kg

I travel every week from KL to HCM, friday fly back to KL and sunday come back to HCM, I have seen “mak cik” stuck at airport because need to pay few hundred dollars due to extra weight. USD18 for 15kilo only for those who not yet purchase any weight during booking. For those who already purchase weight during booking, extra weight means USD15 per kilo. This is for HCM airport only, other airport have different rate

    Hi AZAM,

That’s what we call info at firsthand! Thank you so much for contributing – we do appreciate your explanation!
