SkyEurope gets protection from creditors

June 22nd, 2009

Slovak low cost airline SkyEurope announced today that it was granted creditors protection by Bratislava I District Court. All the flights and services should continue without any restrictions. SkyEurope said that no scheduled flight would be cancelled.

Spokesman of the airline Tomas Kika said: “We have asked for the creditors protection voluntarily, so that we have time for restructuring our company. We believe this move will help SkyEurope to become more attractive for potential investors.” SkyEurope, that has never made profit so far, has been looking for investors for several years.

Protection from creditors enables the company to continue the operation, but its creditors cannot ask for paying debts made in the past. The airline had first problems with creditors earlier this month, when a company Beyond Interactive published ads in the Czech and Slovak newspapers looking for other SkyEurope’s creditors that would join Beyond Interactive in the court action against the airline. Moreover, SkyEurope paid only part of employees’ salaries in the last months and it owes money for social insurance as well.

What do you think about the whole situation? Would you buy an air ticket with SkyEurope now?

Booked fares totalling £400 in Jan 09 then all flights were rescheduled because some of their aircraft were taken back by finance company(due to non payment of leasing costs).

They were more than willing (in teory) to refund me but nothing happened desipte chasing the by phone and email every week. I eventually went to my charge card company in May 09 and got my money back from them.

Don’t risk your money with these guys – they will soon be out of business

    Hi Ian,

Exactly the same situation for me, only I’m owed nearly £800. I didn’t realise I could go to my credit card before the company acctually went bust and just had to wait for my refund. What credit card company were you with? And, what steps did you have to take?

    Thanks in Advance,

    Baz

    Hi Baz

It was American Express (Charge Card)and I was suprised at getting a result. I should imagine if you paid by credit card you would have a good chance of getting it back. I was lucky enough to have an email fron Skyeurope saying that they WOULD refund me which I sent to Amex after they never did. Do you have anything like this you coould send to your credit card company? Good luck. PS. Skyeurope are still trading but have been given protection from ther creditors so I would do asap if I were you

    Regards

    Ian
